Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export sector is expected to set a new record of $6.5 billion in export revenue in 2024, as export markets are forecast to continue experiencing favorable conditions.
Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports reached $2.59 billion in the first 5 months of 2024, up 28.1% year-on-year. Key exports were durian, dragon fruit, banana, jackfruit, and chili pepper.
Vietnam’s total fruit farming area is estimated to reach 1.29 million hectares in 2024, up about 20,000 hectares from the previous year. Total fruit output is expected to reach 13.5 million tons, up 3.4%.
The vegetable farming area increased to 1.03 million hectares in 2024, up 30,000 hectares from 2023, with output expected to rise by 624,000 tons to 19.7 million tons.
Many fruits saw strong export growth in Q1 2024 compared to 2023, including durian (63.3%), dragon fruit (4.9%), banana (25.6%), jackfruit (46.1%), and watermelon (65.7%).
China, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, the Netherlands, and Australia are the main export markets. Vietnam has surpassed Thailand and the Philippines as the largest supplier of durians and bananas to China.
Favorable market conditions are expected to continue, including increased demand in China, Thailand, the UK, and the EU. Vietnam is seeking to expand exports of processed durian products.
